It has come to my attention that there are many out there who have a great misunderstanding or are ignorant about feminism. One of the greatest threats to freedom is widespread ignorance and in an attempt to correct this I intend to write 'A guide to feminism for dummies'. The title is still in the works. In it I'll explore the social movement of feminism while highlighting the necessities of intersectionality and the many stigmas that hold back the feminism movement. Till then here is the prequel or foreward if you may.
What is feminism?
Feminism is essentially a movement that advocates for women's rights and liberation based on the grounds of gender equality. A feminist is someone who supports this movement and membership is not exclusive to women only. Any other sub clause is an individuals preference. This will be further analysed in 'A guide to feminism for dummies'. What we however have to realise also, is that feminism is contextual.
True feminism is not: a sexist ideology neither does it consist of a group of women who support hating men. It is about gender equality and not promoting a superior gender which is the structure of many patriarchal societies( a patriarchal society is a social and political structure that gives the privilege of control and authority to men; male-dominated).
True feminism is: inclusive and supports the empowerment and liberation of women regardless of race, ethnicity, class, religion or sexuality. It must be intersectional as it is not a newly formed white ideology. Intersectionality is a theory that recognises how social worlds and experiences are shaped by the intersections between social categories such as race, gender, class, sexuality and class. It highlights how the many intersections of identities cannot be examined independently and to do so means leaving one's issue ignored.
Structures that hold back feminism.
Misogyny: A concept that involves the prejudice and oppression of women. It is my believe that patriarchy is a derivative of misogyny. A popular myth to debunk is that only men are misogynists.
Gender norms/roles: Apart from the fact it is complete rubbish, gender roles prescribes a range acceptable behaviour or work that is considered acceptable based on gender. These norms play a great disservice to men and women as it confines the individual self. Feminism recognises this as it works for the equality of the sexes.
Look forword to the indept exploration of feminism and the many other structures that suppress women's liberation such as culture, religion and education in 'A guide to feminism for dummies'. (A handy glossary will be inserted)
Enjoy!
